Identity Document Assistance (IDA) Network

MTPC’s Identity Document Assistance Network (IDA Network) provides guidance, support and financial assistance for trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive people living in New England who are seeking to update their legal name and/or gender on federal and state documents. Not everyone needs an attorney’s assistance in this process, but it can still be very overwhelming and complicated so we’re here to help! While MTPC does not currently provide legal representation or legal counsel, we will refer you to an appropriate legal resource if necessary.

Supporting transgender people through the processes for:

  • Legal Name + Gender Marker Changes
  • Social Security Administration
  • U.S. Passports
  • Driver’s Licenses + State ID Cards
  • Birth Certificates

MTPC is partnering with Namesake Collaborative, a Massachusetts-based trans-led business, to create a innovative and affirming platform to streamline the legal name and gender marker change process for trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive people in Massachusetts. Namesake will provide users with a centralized platform to collect all of their information and forms and provide automated guidance through the process. Read more….

The pilot of the Namesake platform is now available! Sign up here to get access to the first version of Namesake and have a chance to provide us very important feedback and suggestions.

So many systems and processes weren’t built for the LGBTQ community. Historically trans folks have had to constantly invent ways of adapting products and resources to get by, and it doesn’t need to be that way. With Namesake we’re trying to reclaim what should be an affirming and exciting process, and we’re grateful to partner with MTPC to launch this in Massachusetts.

Financial Assistance

We provide financial assistance for those who can not afford a name and gender marker change on state and federal identity documents. These fees can exceed $400, depending on the steps, making access difficult for many in our community. You can see the full breakdown of costs in MA here. If you are in need of financial assistance, please use this form to submit your request. If you have any questions, please contact info@masstpc.org.

MTPC also provides assistance to people living in New England states other than MA when there are no other sources of funding available in their state. You can find a list of name change fees in other states here.

If you are able, please consider donating to MTPC as we help our community members with name and gender marker change fees.
