WPATH Standards of Care

7th Edition WPATH Standards of Care

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) released the 7th Edition of its Standards of Care on Sept 25, 2011, which are internationally recognized guidelines for physicians and other care providers who work with transgender persons. (Link Checked 7/12)

Choosing a Therapist

Individuals seeking a therapist are strongly encouraged to interview more than one candidate before choosing. The following articles, especially the first two, are recommended reading.

  • Ethics and Transgender Care, by Nancy Nangeroni. A cautionary piece, based on a review of the National Association of Social Workers policy, and personal observations of local practices.

Stan Ducharme

Boston Medical Centre
720 Harrison, Ave., Ste. 906
Boston, MA 02118

  • Some people have reported a positive experience with Dr Ducharme; others, however, have been denied hormones by him because, according to him, they passed well enough without hormones. One person said the following:
"My experience involved the line, 'just wait a few more months so I can get to know you better.' ... Unfortunately, at the end of 2-3 more months, the line was used again, and again. ... Personally I felt that Dr Ducharme has a hard time understanding people who do not fit the stereotypical masculine role, yet still want to transition." Caveat emptor.

  • Mixed reviews as to how they treat transfolk. They have a long history of not getting it and not caring, but more people are starting to say that they like the care they're receiving there. Those over 30 will likely have an easier time with them.
  • Post-transition/post-operative clients seeking routine medical care have been incorrectly routed to the trans-program.

Andrea Neumann-Mascis, Ph.D.

The Meeting Point, Jamaica Plain The Meeting Point offers services that are informed by lesbian, gay and transgender ways of living. In workshops, individual, and couples therapy, and groups we strive to cultivate the very strengths and uniquenesses that have sustained us.
Our services are based on the convictions that:
- All people are entitled to self definition and self expression.
- All people are entitled to meaningful participation in the community.
- All people are entitled to the expression and validation of our significant relationships.
- And all people are entitled to services that are informed and responsive to all of who we are.

  • "Andrea is located in Jamaica Plain. She is a licensed psychologist who has had extensive experience working with trans people. I highly recommend her."

Margot Meitner, LICSW

Offices in Jamaica Plain and Brookline
(Link Checked 8/12)
Margot has a specialty in her practice working with people around gender identity issues (as well as partners and families) and has been working in the trans community for over twelve years. Margot does not see herself as a “gatekeeper” to the process of transitioning, but rather a guide on this journey of discovery, self-acceptance, and transformation. She offers a free initial half-hour consult for new clients.

Sidney Borum Health Center

75 Kneeland Street, Boston, MA 02111
Call (617) 457-8140
Part of Fenway Health as of August 1, 2010 (previously part of JRI). Will work with patients have limited availability to pay for services. Accepts most insurance plans and will advocate for patients to ensure health insurances pay for patient's care.

  • "Nearly all of my experiences here have been good. I had to go through the gate keeping process to get hormones, but the therapist I spoke to was otherwise respectful. Dr. Ralph Vetters is an excellent primary care physician; very respectful and has strong political beliefs and ideals that inform his work positively. The center's disorganization can be a problem. Accepts most insurance plans and has payment assistance for those without ability to pay."
  • "My experience here has been excellent. The staff is knowledgeable about trans issues and is very respectful. The Borum is a great place for trans people to get tested for STDs and HIV. I had two insurances (one from college, one from parents) that originally stated they both wouldn't cover the counseling or seeing Dr. Vetters for hormones. The Borum worked really hard to get one of the insurance companies to cover the mental health and the other to cover seeing the doctor and I have had no issue after that was settled. They even allowed me to start treatment before they had worked out the insurance issues."
  • A few people have had trouble getting hormones here, and there are horror stories from years ago, but overall, Transphobic attitudes seem to be a thing of the past at this clinic. Dr Ralph Vetters is comfortable prescribing and monitoring hormones, and is very respectful. This is an excellent first stop for folks who are also dealing with homelessness or other kinds of marginalisation (there are barrels of free condoms as well as general hygiene products), and for the most part, the staff** will work with you and whatever insurance you have to get you the care you need. They refer out to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre for specialized care.
  • Note: There is an upper-limit on age at this clinic! See patients 12-29
  • Beware the front desk staff: they are constantly rotating mêlée of interns, and range from dumb and belligerent to savvy and kind.

  • "Dr Kaufman specializes in working with trans and genderqueer folks, has written tons of letters for hormones/surgeries (if you ever are interested in going that path), but has no agenda and won't try to talk you into anything or push you to do anything. She has a crazy amount of connections within the Trans community and can hook you up with all kinds of resources if you ever are in need of something."

Jason Mihalko, PsyD

1208 Massachusetts Avenue
Cambridge, MA 02138
(617) 491-0326

  • "Jason has a huge amount of experience working with the LGBT community. He has (and has had) many Trans and genderqueer patients, but he doesn't call himself a Trans 'specialist'."

Alexandra Myles, MSW, LICSW

Cambridge, MA 02138

Monique Noelle, Ph.D.

930 Massachusetts Ave.
Cambridge, MA 02139

I am a licensed clinical psychologist in Central Square. I have been working with transgender clients since 2002, in private practice and formerly at Fenway Community Health. I have actively pursued training, supervision, and education on the topic. I am happy to help transgender, genderqueer, and gender-questioning individuals with issues of transition and identity, as well as anxiety, depression, relationship problems, and other issues. My practice also serves many bisexual, polyamorous, lesbian, and gay people. I am trained in and use both psychodynamic therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy, especially mindfulness-based, as well as relational-cultural theory (a feminist approach). My past research has addressed anti-BGL hate-crime victimization, and I have taught, published, and made professional presentations concerning that topic, as well as the commonalities between the Bisexual and Transgender movements. I accept all BCBS of Massachusetts (and some out of state), and PPO plans from other insurance companies. My office is accessible by bus and subway, and the building is wheelchair accessible.

I work with gender creative and trans folks across the range of ages, including adults and youth. I have worked with people who have a variety of talents and mental health concerns for over ten years. I also have experience working with a broad range of sexuality and trauma. Past clients have appreciated my style as being open-minded, clear, and respectful.

Ruth Garrott, Psy.D.

"I am a clinical psychologist, working with individuals, couples, and polyamorous constellations. I have worked with transgender clients since 2006 in a variety of settings, including high schools and outpatient mental health clinics. Currently, I am in private practice, where I will be accepting Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO and other insurances as of Fall, 2012, and offer a sliding scale to help clients afford the treatment they need."

"My assumption is that my clients are the best experts on their lives and their needs. I'm glad to help you do what you need to do to get your life moving in the right directions, whether it's teach you skills to deal with depression or anxiety, help you explore how your past experiences affect your emotions and worldview today, or write you letters for hormone-replacement therapy, sex-reassignment surgery, etc. We'll work together to figure out how to best use our time to help you change what you want to change about your life, and strengthen what's already working."

Anna C. Stern, LICSW

Anna Stern Website
269 Washington St, Somerville, MA 02143

"Since long before becoming a therapist, I have worked to build and deepen my allyship to the queer and trans folks in my life. As a therapist, I continue to learn and support people exploring matters of gender identity and sexual orientation. I have supported people in a wide range of romantic/sexual relationship configurations, as well as those looking for space to talk about the impact of past abuse or trauma on their current experience of sexuality and gender. My work is grounded in the belief that people use narrative, or story, to make meaning of their lives and identities. I respect your knowledge and values, and trust that grounding our work in what matters to you will give you more influence over the problems impacting your life."

Audra Gilsing Corona, LICSW

Diane provides therapy and counseling for crossdressers, transsexuals, their partners and families. She has worked with the Transgender community for the past 20 years. Individual, group, family and couple therapy are available. Long distance gender consultations and therapy are available by phone.

  • Rigid old style approach with many mandates and a great deal of control exerted over clients.
  • Requires a minimum of 12 and often many more sessions for HRT referral.
  • Forces self-medicating clients to cease treatment rather than providing letters under the SOC's exemption for self-medicating.
  • Will not provide patient records upon proper request if you change therapists.
  • Younger transitioners complain of pressure to conform to outdated gender stereotypes.

Additional Comments:
Diane's treatment patterns are based on conservative guidelines, which many people find helpful towards guiding them towards their true path. If you just want somebody to write a blank check for hormones or SRS, she is not the right therapist for you. If you want somebody to patiently work with you to find out what really makes you tick, and help you make the best decisions for how you live your life, you may find her to be extremely effective.
