MTPC is pleased to announce that the Massachusetts RMV has amended its policy for changing gender markers on driver's licenses or Massachusetts ID.
To change the gender marker on your state issued identification, you now need only to submit an application together with a Gender Designation Change Form, signed by you and a medical provider attesting to the gender that you consider yourself to be. The medical provider should be either a licensed physician, therapist or counselor, or psychiatric social worker.
You are no longer required to submit medical proof of sex reassignment surgery or an amended birth certificate. The next edition of the Registry of Motor Vehicles Driver's Manual will reflect the new policy.
If you run into any problems, or to help us evaluate the success of this policy, please report your experience.
Changing name on your MA driver's license requires a name change court order, a Social Security Card showing your new name, and a cash fee.

MTPC, in collaboration with Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD), MassEquality, and Rep. Carl Sciortino, succeeded in securing a more trans-friendly RMV gender change policy. In order to track the results of this new policy, we are collecting reports of the experiences that transgender persons are having in attempting to get their sex designation changed on their driver's licenses.
Please complete a form if you have attempted (successfully or not) to change the sex designation (M or F) on your Massachusetts driver's license.
Please reccommend this survey to any trans persons you might know who have attempted to change the sex designation on their Massachusetts driver's license.
Please complete a separate form for each RMV visit you wish to report.
Currently, we are collecting reports for the next time we advocate for transgender persons with the RMV authorities about state policy. Our goal is to gain a clear statement of RMV policy that respects and supports the right of transgender persons to transition their official gender from 'M' to 'F' or 'F' to 'M'.
