[edit] Choosing a therapist
Individuals seeking a therapist are strongly encouraged to interview more than one candidate before choosing. The following two articles, one on choosing a therapist, and one on ethics in transgender care, are recommended reading.
- Therapists: How do you choose? by Rebecca. "I wrote the above article outlining my experience in choosing a therapist. I don't make a specific recommendation, only the path that I took to find a therapist in the hope that it will aid others in their own quest for gender-peace."
- Ethics and Transgender Care, by Nancy Nangeroni. A cautionary piece, based on a review of the National Association of Social Workers policy, and personal observations of local practices
Other articles:
- How to Tell if Your Therapist Sucks Like a Bilge Pump, via Dr Helen
- Choosing a therapist, via TS Roadmap
The therapists, listed below, are listed in alphabetical order.

[edit] Christine Becker, LICSW, BCD
55 Blease Drive
Tewksbury, MA 01876
(781) 862-6170
Christine Becker works with MTFs, FTMs, the GLBTQ community and partners and families. She also has a general practice in counselling and therapy. She has 25 years of experience in the Transgender community. Individual, group, family and couple therapy are available.
Comments:
- Has been very helpful with Transgender folks coming out to their employers.
- Christine tends to take a long time to return calls about non-urgent matters, which can frustrate patients who need to change appointments.
- She runs a spouses only group one Saturday a month.
[edit] Teresa (Terry) Buck, MSW
617-232-3324
40 Webster Pl.
Brookline, MA
Comments:
- Questionable boundaries, care, and ethics.
[edit] Alex Coleman, J.D., Ph.D.
617-738-0463
246 Tappan Street
Brookline, MA 02146
[edit] Stan Ducharme
617-638-7358
Boston Medical Centre
720 Harrison, Ave., Ste. 906
Boston, MA 02118
ducharme@bu.edu
Comments:
- Some people have reported a positive experience with Dr Ducharme; others, however, have been denied hormones by him because, according to him, they passed well enough without hormones. One person said the following:
- "My experience involved the line, 'just wait a few more months so I can get to know you better.' ... Unfortunately, at the end of 2-3 more months, the line was used again, and again. ... Personally I felt that Dr Ducharme has a hard time understanding people who do not fit the stereotypical masculine role, yet still want to transition." Caveat emptor.
[edit] Diane Ellaborn LICSW
508-788-5406
152 Edmands Rd.
Framingham, MA 01701
Diane provides therapy and counseling for crossdressers, transsexuals, their partners and families. She has worked with the Transgender community for the past 20 years. Individual, group, family and couple therapy are available. Long distance gender consultations and therapy are available by phone.
Comments:
- Rigid old style approach with many mandates and a great deal of control exerted over clients.
- Requires a minimum of 12 and often many more sessions for HRT referral.
- Forces self-medicating clients to cease treatment rather than providing letters under the SOC's exemption for self-medicating.
- Will not provide patient records upon proper request if you change therapists.
- Younger transitioners complain of pressure to conform to outdated gender stereotypes.

7 Haviland St., Boston, MA 02115
Web site
Comments:
- Mixed reviews as to how they treat transfolk. They have a long history of not getting it and not caring, but more people are starting to say that they like the care they're receiving there. Those over 30 will likely have an easier time with them.
- Post-transition/post-operative clients seeking routine medical care have been incorrectly routed to the trans-program.

Comments:
- Experienced in Trans issues, Georgia is scrupulous about maintaining healthy boundaries in her practice, and intelligent and helpful in her approach to Trans issues. Not the easiest to get ahold of, or the quickest to write surgery letters, but more trustworthy than most. (posted with permission)

Website
Part of Fenway Health as of August 1, 2010 (previously part of JRI). Will work with patients have limited availability to pay for services. Accepts most insurance plans and will advocate for patients to ensure health insurances pay for patient's care.
Comments:
- "Nearly all of my experiences here have been good. I had to go through the gatekeeping process to get hormones, but the therapist I spoke to was otherwise respectful. The entirety of the staff is cisgendered to my knowledge. Dr. Ralph Vetters is an excellent primary care physician; very respectful and has strong political beliefs and ideals that inform his work positively. The center's disorganization can be a problem. Accepts most insurance plans and has payment assistance for those without ability to pay."
- "My experience here has been excellent. The staff is knowledgeable about trans issues and is very respectful. The Borum is a great place for trans people to get tested for STDs and HIV. I had two insurances (one from college, one from parents) that originally stated they both wouldn't cover the counseling or seeing Dr. Vetters for hormones. The Borum worked really hard to get one of the insurance companies to cover the mental health and the other to cover seeing the doctor and I have had no issue after that was settled. They even allowed me to start treatment before they had worked out the insurance issues."
