Testify for Transgender Civil Rights

Asking your friends, family, and co-workers to send in letters of testimony

An easy email campaign, by Calyb Hare

penpapers200

One of our steering committee members got 16 letters sent to elected officials in under 24 hours by emailing his friends & family and asking them to sign an attached letter. This is very easy and doesn't take very long.

The first step is to create a personal email from you to your friends, family, and maybe even co-workers (samples provided). Try to make this letter personal and remind the people in your life about your experience as a trans person or ally of the trans community. Feel free to copy and paste the sample we have provided, but be sure to edit it with your information. Don't forget to highlight how easy it is for them to help.

"It will take five minutes and about a buck in postage, but it could mean saving some one's job, home or even life."

Once you have your email written, add contacts. If you have an address book within your email account, upload it, that's a good start. If not, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and AOL save contacts you email frequently. I use Gmail and what I did was go through the alphabet. Once I type the A into the TO: box, it pulls up every person I email that has either a first name or last name that starts with the letter A.

I suggest using the BCC option. "BCC" means that you are blind copying in each contact. So "Sally" can not see all the other people you have sent that email to. She only sees that the email that came to her. Under the TO: box, it gives three options and BCC is one of them. People will respect the fact that you took the time to keep their information private. Once you have uploaded your contacts and have the body of your email written, attach the documents provided on the website. Before you can do this, you will need to download and save the documents on the computer you are using. Remember to save them in a location where you can easily retrieve them, like "My Documents".

Proof read your email. Be sure you have attached the documents and send your email.

Finally, if you do receive any response from someone stating they have mailed the letters, be sure to send them a reply email to thank them. If you receive any responses in the form of questions and do not feel comfortable answering them, please email testimony@masstpc.org.
