This is the number of states that have enacted legal protections for freedom of gender identity or expression in employment, education, housing, accomodations, credit, and/or hate crimes.

Massachusetts is not one of them.   Yet.


These are the states:

  1. Minnesota (1993)
  2. Missouri (1999) - Hate crimes only
  3. Rhode Island (2001) - Discrimination only
  4. Pennsylvania (2002) - Hate crimes only
  5. California (2003)
  6. New Mexico (2003)
  7. Connecticut (2004) - Hate crimes only
  8. Illinois (2005) - Discrimination only
  9. Maine (2005) - Discrimination only
  10. Maryland (2005) - Hate Crimes only
  11. Hawaii (2005) - Housing Discrimination only
  12. Washington (2006) - Discrimination only
  13. New Jersey (2007) - Discrimination only
  14. Iowa (2007) - Discrimination only
  15. Oregon (2007) - Discrimination only
  16. Colorado (2007)
  17. Vermont (2007)

In addition, Indiana, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio prohibit discrimination in public employment on the basis of gender identity and expression through executive order.
