Guilty verdict in Angie Zapata murder trial

April 22nd, 2009

MTPC just got word that Allen Andrade will be sentenced to life without parole for the murder of 18-year-old Angie Zapata of Greeley, CO. This is the first murder prosecuted under Colorado’s Hate Crimes Law. Our thoughts are with Angie’s family and friends.

“Truth” now available

April 13th, 2009

MTPC, GLAD and the Transgender Civil Rights Coalition have released a new document, “The Truth About H.1728/S.1687″, in response to myths being promulgated about “An Act Relative to Gender-Based Discrimination and Hate Crimes.” The sheet includes 6 points refuting common opposition myths. Two versions are available for download, a smaller one for emailing ease, a higher-resolution version for printing.

Not mentioned in this document is the apparently frequent misunderstanding that this bill would create complex new laws.  In fact, this bill creates no new laws, it merely adds “gender identity or expression” to the list of classes protected by our state’s non-discrimination and hate crimes laws.  This list varies across different parts of the law, but generally  includes  race, religion, creed, color, national origin, and sexual orientation.

There is just nothing complicated about this bill.

Lobby Day RESONATES

April 7th, 2009

Swapable image

Today’s Trans Civil Rights Lobby Day was a huge success, with about 300 people joining with activists, legislators, friends, family members, allies and a parade of legislators all focused on transgender civil rights. The halls of the State House resonated with repeated rounds of applause from the attentive audience gathered around the Grand Staircase as speakers moved and inspired participants.

Thanks to everyone who made this great day possible!
